The Daily Show is a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning American satirical television program produced by and airing on Comedy Central. The half-hour long show premiered on Monday, July 22, 1996, and was hosted by Craig Kilborn, who acted as its anchorman. Kilborn left the show in December, 1998; Jon Stewart has hosted since January, 1999.
Providing news-related comedy in the tradition of several popular comedic forerunners (Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update" segment, HBO's Not Necessarily The News, Channel 4's The 11 O'Clock Show, the BBC's The Day Today, CBC's This Hour Has 22 Minutes and TQS's 100 Limite), The Daily Show reports with a satirical edge about the foibles and hypocrisies of the real world.
Jon Stewart (born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz; November 28, 1962) is an American comedian, satirist, actor, writer, Pundit, and producer. He is best known as the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and for his political satire.
Stewart started as a stand-up comedian, but later branched out to television, hosting Short Attention Span Theater for Comedy Central. He went on to host his own show on MTV, called The Jon Stewart Show, and then hosted another show on MTV called You Wrote It, You Watch It.
Stewart became the host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central in early 1999. He is also a writer and co-producer of the show. After Stewart joined, The Daily Show steadily gained popularity and critical acclaim leading to his first Emmy Award in 2001. Stewart himself has also gained significant notoriety as a vocal, outspoken critic of the Bush administration and of personality-driven media shows, in particular Bill O'Reilly and the Fox News Channel. Critics say Stewart benefits from a double standard: he critiques other news shows from the safe, removed position of his "mock news" desk. However the validity of this distinction is challenged by a number of critics, researchers, and even supporters, some of whom have awarded The Daily Show with news and journalism awards.
Stewart co-wrote America (The Book), which was one of the top fifteen best-sellers in the US in 2004. Stewart hosted the 78th Academy Awards and the 80th Academy Awards.
Providing comedy/news in the tradition of TV Nation and SNL's Weekend Update, Comedy Central's Daily Show reports on the foibles and of the real world with a satirical edge. In addition to news stories, the Daily Show also has celebrities (and semi-celebrities) on for interviews with the host, Jon Stewart. Lampooning everything from televangelists to Charlton Heston ("I did not play a homo in Ben-Hur"), and shamelessly assigning faux-news epithets ("Newt Gingrich: Giant Toddler") Kilborn, Winstead, and the crew actually manage to report some real news from time to time. The Daily Show has a new political edge, espcially on the coverage of the democratic presidential candidates, titled "Indecision 2004." Also, many politicians have come on the show for interviews, for example, Sen. John McCain, Carol Mosley Braun, Sen. Biden, etc. In addition to this, there are the special reports by The Daily Show's correspondents. They tackle every news story from the persecution of smokers to trick or treating at embassies in New York and to "Sex and the City" spoofs. The Daily Show is a gem, watch it! Written by Kristen
Jon Stewart is just hitting his stride at the age of 38. It's amazing that it has taken this long for people to embrace his sarcastic, sardonic and incisive sense of humor. Of particular note was a regular "gig" on "Larry Sanders Show, The" (1992). Playing himself, Stewart was the oft-timed "Guest Host" of "The Larry Sanders Show". He became as much a part of the show's fabric as some of the regular performers. He has emerged as a bonafide television personality with his ascension to host of "Daily Show, The" (1996)/Comedy Central since taking over for Craig Kilborn in 1999.
Jon Leibowitz was born in New York, though he soon after moved to Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He graduated from the College Of William And Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He made his breakthrough on "Larry Sanders Show, The" (1992), before moving on to other roles. His wife Tracey gave birth to their second child, a girl, Maggie Rose Stewart 6 lbs, 9 oz on the afternoon of Feb 4, 2006.
