Pennies from Heaven is the 1981 film adaptation of the 1978 BBC television drama of the same name. Dennis Potter, the writer of the original British series, adapted his own screenplay for American audiences. The film's setting was changed to Depression era Chicago. Potter was nominated for the 1981 Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay. The film starred Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters, and Christopher Walken. The director was Herbert Ross and the choreographer was Danny Daniels.
In Chicago during the depression, sheet music salesman, Arthur Parker, is trying to sell his products, but it's not easy to convince unwilling music store owners to buy them. Although he's already married to the somewhat drab Joan, when he meets school teacher Eileen in a music store, he falls in love with her. Written by Mattias Thuresson
While imprisoned on a false charge, a singer meets an inmate on death row. The inmate tells the singer that to atone for the murder for which he is to be executed, he is leaving his family estate to the relatives of the man he killed, and asks the singer that when he gets out, to help the family move into their new home.
