Overkill is a slang term for the use of excessive force that seems to go much further than necessary to achieve its goal. For example, shooting an ant with a rocket launcher would be overkill.
"Overkill" is a song by the heavy metal band Motörhead. It was released in 7" and 12" vinyl pressings in 1979. It is covered with B-side "Too Late Too Late" which appears on the CD re-issues of the Overkill album. Early copies came with a free 'Overkill' badge.
On March 9, 1979 the band played this song on the BBC TV Top of the Pops show, to support the release of the single.
"Overkill" is usually played as the last 'encore' and normally represents the very last chance for fans to "strut their stuff" at a live gig.
The artwork on the sleeve was created by Joe Petagno, based on his design for the album's cover.
"Overkill" is a song by Australian band Men at Work and featured on their 1983 album Cargo. It was written by lead singer Colin Hay. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at #28 and eventually went to #3, as well as found a second life twenty years later through its relation to hit sitcom Scrubs. It was featured acoustically in the episode "My Overkill", along with a cameo of Colin Hay singing it. It is considered by many to be Men at Work's best song, when it was released it was a departure from the typical Men At Work's style of reggae pop. Overkill instead had hard hitting lyrics and blues and roots feel.
Hay's solo acoustic version was included on his 2003 album Man @ Work.
Lazlo Bane and Colin Hay have an updated version of this song as well as a video.
The Benjamin Gate have also released a cover version of the song.
