"New Year" is a pop song written by British group Sugababes, Jony Lipsey, Cameron McVey, Felix Howard, Matt Rowe and Paul Simm for their debut album One Touch. The song was produced by Lipsey, McVey and Simm and received a positive reception from music critics. It was released as the second single in the winter of 2000 and reached the top fifteen in the United Kingdom, where it sold 75,000 copies. It reached the top thirty in Ireland, but failed to make an impact on the singles charts elsewhere.
The New Year is Death Cab for Cutie's fifth single release (counting the Stability single and EP) and also the first single from Transatlanticism.
The video takes place in a city in which a waiter in a fancy restaurant rides his bicycle to an old diner where he sees his love interest, all taking place on the night of New Year's Eve.
New Year is an opera in three acts by Michael Tippett, who wrote his own libretto as well as the music. The opera was first performed by Houston Grand Opera in October 1989, in a production by Peter Hall. The first UK production was at Glyndebourne, and subsequently Glyndebourne Touring Opera presented an adapted version of Peter Hall's production. As with Tippett's other operas, the text and music encompass a widely eclectic range of cultural references. Lewis, Geraint New Year in the New World (November 1989). The Musical Times, 130 (1761): pp. 665-669. Tippett himself has noted that the "primary metaphor" of the opera is dance.
