"My Hero" is the third single from the Foo Fighters' second album The Colour and the Shape. It was released as a single in 1998.
Many believe the song was dedicated to the memory of Dave Grohl's former Nirvana bandmate, Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994. According to Grohl, he has explained that the song is dedicated to ordinary, everyday heroes, as he himself never had musical or sports heroes growing up as a child.
The song was featured in the film and soundtrack to Varsity Blues, it is also in the film Not Another Teen Movie, but not in the official soundtrack. The song was also featured in the PlayStation game Gran Turismo 2 as the arcade mode ending credits theme.
There is an acoustic version performed live on The Howard Stern Show by Grohl. It has not been released on an album, but is a popular download on file sharing sites.
In a post-September 11 episode of CBS's Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn (September 21, 2001), Grohl and bassist Nate Mendel performed an acoustic rendition of the song.
A full group acoustic version is available on the 2006 live album and DVD Skin and Bones.
The 2006 album Sound of Superman features an acoustic cover of "My Hero" by Paramore.
