Marcel L'Herbier, Légion d'honneur (April 23 1888 or 1890 - November 26 1979) was a French writer, producer and director. He was the founder and the first President of the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques.
Founded the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques (IDHEC) in 1943. Funded by the French government, the school offered training in all aspects of production as well as in history, theory, and criticism. In the postwar years IDHEC's reputation grew steadily, attracting an impressive international student body including such future luminaries as Louis Malle, Volker Schlöndorff, Nelson Pereira dos Santos, and Costa-Gavras. IDHEC was subsumed within the Fondation Européenne des Métiers de l'Image et du Son (FEMIS), which opened its doors on November 13, 1986. FEMIS is a privately owned institution.
