Kathy Griffin (born November 4, 1960) is an Emmy Award-winning American stand-up comedian, producer, actress, and gay icon. She has also been a voice actress and a red carpet commentator. Griffin is a self-proclaimed "D-list celebrity." She is arguably best known for her role on NBC's Suddenly Susan. She is also known for her reality show, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, and for guest co-hosting on The View.
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List is an Emmy Award-winning television show which premiered on Bravo in August of 2005. Griffin also debuted five comedy specials during the show's run, Straight To Hell, Everybody Can Suck It, Strong Black Woman, Kathy Griffin Is...Not Nicole Kidman, and The D-List. The show follows the struggle of self-proclaimed "D-list" celebrity Kathy Griffin to climb the Hollywood ladder. Her relationship with her parents and husband was also heavily featured. The first season of the show was nominated for a 2006 Emmy Award in the category "Outstanding Reality Program." The show was nominated again on July 19th, 2007, for another Emmy Award in the same category, and won. The show was renewed for a third season that premiered on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at 10:00PM on Bravo. The third season premiered with the highest ratings for the show with approximately one million viewers. The season finale aired July 24, 2007.
In Australia, the second season is currently being shown on The Comedy Channel. The third season will premiere on Arena on June 3, 2008. The first and second seasons are being shown in the UK on the E! channel, premiering June 3rd 2007 at 10pm. The first two seasons were broadcast on the Toronto-based independent station Sun TV in Canada while the third season was sold to the national cable station The Comedy Network.
The show has been renewed for a fourth season.
On the Gay Pimping' with Jonny McGovern pod-cast, co-host Linda James renamed her intern Alessandra to "Pom-pom" after Kathy Griffin's dog from the show.
Kathy Griffin, a native of Chicagoland, is the youngest of five children. She has three older brothers and an older sister. When her parents retired to California, Kathy moved west with them after finishing high school and began trying to break into show business. She performed with the Groundlings and then paid her dues doing stand-up at various clubs until she was discovered. According to her brothers, as a kid, Kathy would circulate among the guests at parties and tell jokes. Kathy has a regular stand-up engagement at the Laugh Factory in L.A. and hosted the reality series "Average Joe" (2003). She stars in the Emmy winning reality series "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" (2005).
