John F. Beard is a former Emmy-award winning American news anchor based in Los Angeles.
From December 1993 until September 2007, he anchored, with Christine Devine, the 10 p.m. newscast at KTTV in Los Angeles. Prior to KTTV, Beard was a long time anchor at KNBC-TV, beginning a 13 year career at the station in 1980. It was during one of Beard's newscasts at KNBC that an imbalanced viewer came onto the news set and forced consumer advocate David Horowitz to read the man's manifesto at gunpoint. Once Horowitz finished reading the paper, the man set the gun down on the desk, at which time Beard quickly grabbed it.
Beard has also worked at WIVB-TV in Buffalo, NY and at WITN-TV in his home state of North Carolina. He is a graduate of East Carolina University.
Beard has appeared as himself and various similar 'newscaster' roles in a number of television series' including Spider-Man, Arrested Development and 24.
Beard was dropped by KTTV after the station announced KTLA anchor Carlos Amezcua will become the main news anchor of the 10pm news. Some sources have suggested that Beard was removed because he was no longer engaged in the newscast. According to Beard's personal website, he indirectly attacked FOX 11, stating that news was becoming a reflection of entertainment versus hard factual news to help viewers make better decisions. Beard also left KNBC under the same circumstances back in 1993 and was very critical of that station then. Beard stated he plans to return to television sometime in the future, though it is unknown if this will happen.
John Beard (born 1943) is a Welsh artist and painter based in Sydney, Lisbon and London.
John Beard (b c1717; d Hampton, 5 Feb 1791) was an English tenor of the 18th century. He is best remembered for creating an extensive number of roles in the operas and oratorios of George Frideric Handel.
His début came in Handel's 1734 revival of Il pastor fido, which was a great success. He continued to sing for Handel, creating roles in ten of his operas and performing in every one of Handel's English-language oratorios, odes, and music dramas, with the sole exception of The Choice of Hercules. He also performed for Thomas Arne, and sang at the Chapel Royal. His marriage, during 1739, to Lady Henrietta Herbert , caused much scandal: Lord Egmont commented that "there is no prudence below the girdle". Lady Herbert died in 1753 and in 1759 he married again, this time to Charlotte Rich, whose father was the proprietor of the opera house in Covent Garden. After he died in 1761 Beard succeeded to the role until 1767, when deafness forced him to retire, selling Covent Garden's ownership for £60,000.
Handel created several heroic leading roles for Beard, a revolution in the heyday of the castrato voice. The title roles in Samson, Judas Maccabeus, and Jeptha call for strength and expressive qualities over agility. Charles Burney commented that he "constantly possessed the favour of the public by his superior conduct, knowledge of Music, and intelligence as an actor."
