Joe Roth (Wikipedia.org)

Joe Roth (born June 13, 1948) is an American Entertainment executive, producer and film director.

Roth co-founded Morgan Creek Productions in 1987 and was chairman of Twentieth Century Fox (1989–1993), Caravan Pictures (1993–1994), and Walt Disney Studios (1994–2000) before founding Revolution Studios in 2000.

Over the course of his career, he has produced over 40 films, and has directed six to date, including 1990's Coupe de Ville (in which a Cadillac Coupe de Ville plays a big part) and 2000's America's Sweethearts.

Roth, who was ranked 6th in Premiere Magazine's 2003 Hollywood Power List, produced the 76th annual Academy Awards.

Roth announced that in October 2007, when Revolution's distribution deal with Sony Pictures ends, Revolution Studios will close and he will join Sony as a producer.

On November 13, 2007, Roth was introduced as the majority owner of a Seattle, Washington-based Major League Soccer franchise along with Paul Allen. The team - which will call Qwest Field home - is set to begin play in 2009.

Joe Roth (American football) (Wikipedia.org)

Joe Roth (c. 1955 - February 19, 1977) was a college football player, an All-American quarterback at the University of California, Berkeley. Roth played the 1976 season with melanoma and died 3 months after his last regular season game (and just weeks after an all-star game in Japan), in February 1977. Later that year, Roth's number 12 jersey was retired, the only number currently retired by the Cal Football program.

A 1973 graduate of Granite Hills High School in San Diego, Roth led Grossmont College of El Cajon to an undefeated season and state title in 1974, and transferred to Cal in 1975. blank">http://calbears.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/110901aaa.html

Originally a back-up, he won the _starting role in the fourth game of the 1975 season, and led the California Golden Bears to the Pac-8 title as co-champions. ia/pac10/california/yearly_results.php?year=1975" target="_blank">http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/pac10/california/yearly_results.php?year=1975 The 1975 team had such stars as running back _Chuck Muncie and wide receiver Wesley Walker. Cal led the nation in total offense, remarkably gaining the same yardage both passing and rushing (2,522 yards passing and 2,522 yards rushing). blank">http://calbears.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/101700aab.html

Roth was a pre-season favorite for the _Heisman Trophy in 1976. The season was more tumultuous, and towards the end of the year Joe's performance started to drop, but he was named an All-American and would finish ninth in the Heisman Trophy voting, won by Tony Dorsett. blank">http://www.heisman.com/winners/t-dorsett76.html After the season ended, he revealed that he played the last half of the season with melanoma. It was the recurrence of a previously removed tumor. He died in his _Berkeley apartment on February 19, 1977 at the age of 21.

Posthumously, Roth received the Berkeley Citation, which is awarded to a wide range of distinguished people, academic or nonacademic, whose attainments significantly exceed the standards for advancement in their fields and whose contributions to the university are manifestly "above and beyond the call of duty." He was also inducted into the University of California Athletic Hall of Fame.

Several awards are named in honor of Roth, including the Joe Roth Award for the high school player in the San Diego area that best demonstrates courage, the Joe Roth Memorial Award which is given to the San Diego County junior college football player that best exemplifies high academic standards and athletic excellence, and the Joe Roth Award which is given to the Cal football player who best demonstrates courage, attitude & sportsmanship.

The University of California, Berkeley designates each year's home game against its Southern California rival (either USC or UCLA) as the Joe Roth Memorial Game. http://calbears.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/111007aaa.html
