Jim Carter (born 1948) is an English actor noted for his roles on film and television. His film credits include Shakespeare in Love, Richard III, and The Madness of King George. Television credits include The Singing Detective, Lipstick on Your Collar, Arabian Nights, and the episode Duty of Hornblower.
He plays John Faa in The Golden Compass (2007), the first film in the adaptation of the His Dark Materials trilogy, and Captain Brown in the BBC five-part series Cranford (2007). He also plays Detective Victor Gates in the film The Thief Lord
Carter is married to actress Imelda Staunton, with whom he has a daughter.
Jim Laver Carter (born June 24, 1961) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour.
Carter was born in Spring Lake, North Carolina. He attended Arizona State University in Tempe and was a distinguished member of the golf team - a two-time first-team All-American and the 1983 NCAA Champion. He won the 1981 and 1984 Arizona State Amateur Championship, and the 1983 and 1984 Southwest Amateur Championship. Carter was honored with the Arizona State University Athlete of the Year award in 1984. In 1995, he was inducted into the Arizona State University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Carter turned pro in 1985. In contrast to his college career, Carter's level of success as a tour professional has been very modest. He won once on the Nationwide Tour in 1994, and once on the PGA Tour in 2000. Qualifying for the PGA Tour has been a constant struggle; however, he managed to qualify for the elite tour in 13 of the 16 years between 1990 and 2005. His best finish in a major championship was T-24 at the 2002 U.S. Open. Carter lives in Scottsdale, Arizona.
James Carter (born October 18, 1948, St. Paul, Minnesota) is a former American football player who played linebacker for the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League from 1970-1978.
A 1984 diary entry by Alan Bennett (I) (scriptwriter of Private Function, A (1984)) mentions Carter amusing himself on the set between takes by doing conjuring tricks. In the finished film he performs a magic trick as Inspector Noble, and in Shakespeare in Love (1998) can be seen juggling.

Was a member of the "Madhouse Company of London", a comedy troupe which performed in Boston in the 1970s. Other members were Marcel Steiner, Marc Weil and Tommy Shands. Ken Campbell, who appears in "A Fish Called Wanda" as George Thomason's lawyer was also associated with the troupe.
