Time signature (Wikipedia.org)

The time signature (also known as "meter signature") is a notational convention used in Western musical notation to specify how many beats are in each measure and what note value constitutes one beat. Time signatures indicate meter, but do not necessarily determine it; the composer is free to write in a different meter than that indicated by the signature, so long as the measures contain the indicated number of beats.

Most time signatures comprise two numbers, one above the other. In text (as in this article), time signatures are written in the manner of a fraction: the example shown at right would be written 3/4.

In a musical score, the time signature appears at the beginning of the piece, immediately following the key signature (or immediately following the clef if the piece is in C major or A minor). A mid-score time signature, usually immediately following a barline, indicates a change of meter.

Time (Pink Floyd song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Time" is the third track from British progressive rock band Pink Floyd's 1973 album, The Dark Side of the Moon, and the only song on the album credited to all four members of the band. It is noted for its long introductory passage of clocks chiming and alarms ringing, recorded as a quadrophonic test by Alan Parsons, not specifically for the album.

The song is a memento mori describing the phenomenon in which time seems to pass more quickly as one ages, often leading to despair in old age over missed opportunities of the past.

Time (David Bowie song) (Wikipedia.org)

"Time" is a song written by David Bowie in New Orleans in November 1972 during the American leg of his first Ziggy Stardust tour. It was released as the opening track on Side Two of the album Aladdin Sane in April 1973. An edited version of the song supplanted the release of the single "Drive-In Saturday" in the United States and Japan.

The piece has been described as "burlesque vamp", and compared to the cabaret music of Jacques Brel and Bertolt Brecht/Kurt Weill. Ben Gerson (19 July 1973). blank">Rolling Stone review of Aladdin Sane Keyboardist _Mike Garson said that he employed "the old stride piano style from the 20s and I mixed it up with avant-garde jazz styles plus it had the element of show music, plus it was very European." David Buckley (1999) Strange Fascination - David Bowie: The Definitive Story: pp.185-187 Co-producer Ken Scott took credit for the idea of mixing the sound of Bowie's breathing right up front when the music paused, just before guitarist Mick Ronson launched into his cacophonous solo.

The song's best-known couplet is "Time - he flexes like a whore / Falls wanking to the floor"; RCA allowed it to remain in the US single edit, being unfamiliar with the meaning of the British term "wanking". Nicholas Pegg (2000). The Complete David Bowie: p.218 However when Bowie came to perform the song on the US television special The 1980 Floor Show in August 1973, he slurred the line in such a way as to render it "Falls swanking to the floor". blank">"Time" at The Ziggy Stardust Companion Conversely, RCA cut the line "In _quaaludes and red wine" from the single, while Bowie retained it for The 1980 Floor Show. The phrase "Billy Dolls" refers to Billy Murcia, late drummer for the New York Dolls.

Like its parent album, "Time" has divided critical opinion. Biographer David Buckley calls the full-length version "five minutes of wired perfection" and the lyrics "poetic and succinct", while NME critics Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray have described the words as sounding "strained and incomplete", concluding that "with such a weak lyric, the overly melodramatic music sounds faintly absurd". Roy Carr & Charles Shaar Murray (1981). Bowie: An Illustrated Record: pp.54-55

Time (musical) (Wikipedia.org)

Time is a musical with a book and lyrics by Dave Clark and David Soames, music by Jeff Daniels, and additional songs by David Pomeranz.

Derived from the 1970s musical The Time Lord by Soames and Daniels, it focuses on contemporary rock musician Chris Wilder, who has been transported with his backup singers and band from a concert to the High Court of the Universe in the Andromeda Galaxy. In light of mankind's strides in space exploration, The Time Lord Melchisedic (loosely based on the title character in the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who) has decided the time has come to examine Earth's people to determine what role they will play in the quest for universal peace, and Wilder and his band are called upon to defend their planet.

The heavily-amplified multi-media event relied heavily on special effects, including a holographic floating head named Akash that served as a narrator throughout the show. The interior of the Dominion was gutted and reconstructed to accommodate the massive steel set with hydraulic lift designed by John Napier.

The West End production, directed and choreographed by Larry Fuller (assisted by Arlene Phillips), opened on April 8 1986 at the Dominion Theatre, where it ran for two years. Cliff Richard starred as Wilder, Jeff Shankley as Melchisedic, and Dilys Watling as one of the tribunal judges, with a pre-filmed Sir Laurence Olivier as Akash. David Cassidy replaced Richard later in the run.

A concept album was released in the United States by Capitol Records and EMI for the rest of the world (now out-of-print). In addition to Richard and Olivier, it featured Freddie Mercury, Julian Lennon, Leo Sayer, Ashford & Simpson, Dionne Warwick, John Christie, and Paul Miles-Kingston. Olivier's spoken "Theme From 'Time'" was released as a single in some countries and was a surprise hit on the Australian charts, reaching #27.

Time (Alan Parsons Project song) (Wikipedia.org)

Time is a 1981 song by the Alan Parsons Project. The song charted at number 15 on the U.S. Billboard charts, thus making it one of the group's more successful singles.

The song was the first Alan Parsons Project single featuring Eric Woolfson as lead vocalist, and one of the group's few songs in which Alan Parsons' own voice can be heard singing (background/ counterpoint vocals).
